in the poem ezekiel narrates the incidence of his mother being bitten by a scorpion which he witnessed as a child. he says that after the scorpion left which was driven into the house because of the rain, the villagers gathered in his house like the swarms of flies and began chanting the name of God for about a thousand times, praying to stop the movements of the scorpion, as they believed that with every move of the scorpion the poison would also move in the mother's blood. he further on narrates another superstitious action of the villagers which was that they prayed that the scorpion stopped and that the sins of his mother's previous biirth be washed away and that the suffering of the mother might decrease her misfortunes of her next birth. they even prayed to God that the poison may purify her flesh. his father too who was a rational and sceptic man tried powders, mixtures and herbs to cure his mother but as the last resort he too tried prayesr and blessings, the priest also performed his rites to tame the poison but with no positive result. ultimately when the sting was lost after whole twenty hours, ezekiel's mother after being relieved of the pain, like a typical indian mother thanked god that the scorpion picked her and spared her children.
