Mrs. Sen has one particular struggle when it comes to adjusting to American life. She spends a great deal of her portion of the story discussing her past life in India with the young Eliot, who has come to live with her. She details the different foods that she used to make and the unique recipes that are typical of Indian traditional food but were uncommon for Eliot and other Americans. Mrs. Sen even goes through and discusses her collection of traditional Saris, showing that she has retained a good bit of her Indian culture.

However, she has grown fairly accustomed to American life by the time of the story....
