Mattie begins her maturation when she flees from the city with her grandfather, they are abandoned, and she must take care of him with few resources. She uses the lessons about soldiering he taught her to find food and water. She seeks to find him blankets and better food when she is stricken herself. When she survives the yellow fever, she triumphs over the disease when so many others failed and died. But, she had her survival thanks to her grandfather's care. As she takes care of her ailing grandfather in the abandoned coffeehouse, she again shows maturity. At his death, she lays him out properly and even manages a burial with a prayer. Her rescuing of Nell and subsequent care of the little orphan girl shows a role reversal in which she is now the parental figure.  Her decision to take Nell to the orphan house also shows maturity. She cares deeply for the child. yet knows she cannot provide. Luckily, the orphan house was overflowing, and they could not take the child in. Moving the sick children to the coffeehouse to care for them in a better environment was a further sign of maturity. Finally, her decision to reopen the coffeehouse with Eliza as her partner, shows she has achieved adulthood. One sign of her physical growing up was when she put on her mother's clothes and they fit.
