Lady Macbeth challenges Macbeth's manhood. She asks him if he is afraid to finish what he has started. She remains calm after the murders, telling him a little water will clean up the traces of the murder. She takes the daggers and plants them on the guards because Macbeth has lost his will to go back to the murder scene. She keeps Macbeth straight as she does the thinking for him.

Before the murder, when Macbeth decides that they will proceed no further in the business of murdering King Duncan, she gives Macbeth a speech that convinces him to follow through in murdering King Duncan:

Are you afraid
To be the same man in reality
As the one you wish to be? Would you have the crown
Which you believe to be the ornament of life,
And yet live like a coward in your own self-esteem (Act 1, Scene 7)
