One way the Party regulates human sexuality by exerting tight control over marriages. If either partner shows evidence of attraction for the other, the marriage will not be allowed. Generally, though the Party uses propaganda to portray the sex act as disgusting and dirty, good for nothing but reproduction. "Sexual intercourse," the story says, "was to be looked on as a slightly disgusting minor operation, like having an enema." There is even a Party organization, known as the Junior Anti-Sex League, that advocates total celibacy, with fertilizations being achieved by ARTSEM, or artificial insemination. By removing all pleasure from sex, the Party hoped to eliminate one more aspect of human existence that it couldn't control.
