The elephant shrew is a mammal that is native to central Africa.  It is not really a shrew but was given that name because it seemed to early scientists to look and move like a shrew.

The elephant shrew has a few main means of reacting to enemies.  Its best defense is running away and hiding.  It runs quite fast and it tends to have numerous nests that can confuse enemies.  It has two other main forms of defense.  It slaps its tail on the ground to try to discourage attacks and it also uses its strong scent to ward off predators.
