How does Della manage to buy Jim a gift that she thinks is worthy of him?
Della manages to buy Jim the fob chain for his pocket watch by selling her hair to a shop named, "Mme. Sofronie. Hair Goods of All Kinds." Her hair was her most valued possession, but she wanted so badly to give Jim a gift worthy of the love she felt for him so she sacrificed the only thing she could in order to raise the money to buy the perfect gift. She knows that Jim's watch is a fine piece of work that he treasures, but that he's also embarrassed that such a fine watch is worn on a leather strap. The fob chain is the perfect gift if only he hadn't sold it to buy Della some beautiful combs to wear in her treasured and beautiful hair.
