How does Cisneros use culture in "The House on Mango Street" and why is this so importnant to its success?
By interspersing dialogue and narration with certain words in Spanish, and by indicating the dialect of her charcters, Cisneros shows us the beauty and diversity of the Hispanic culture. She also reveals common attitudes among "her people." By portraying the culture frankly, with all its positives and negatives, she allows us into a world which may be unfamiliar to the audience. In addition, her own writing, in places, seems to take on the tone of simple storytelling that is prevalent among Hispanic families and generations.
