Deciding the best construction materials for keeping a house warm
An understanding of properties of matter, building materials in this case, is required for selection of material for any given purpose. For examples, the building materials that are used in the construction of houses should keep the house warm during winter months and cool during the summer months. For this purpose, we need to understand a property called "thermal conductivity" of the material. A thermally conductive material conducts heat, while a non-thermally conductive material or insulator does not. We require insulator as our construction material to ensure that external temperature conditions are not transmitted (or conducted) to the interior of our house. In some cases, we also use insulating materials to envelope the house (for example, roof insulation) and protect it against the external thermal conditions.
Similarly, for the second scenario, you need a knowledge of thermal conductivity of the material. Additionally, the material should have high melting point.
