How do you know Huck and Jim are friends by the end of Chapter 11?

In chapter 11, Huck, dressed as a girl on Jim's advice, goes to town to find out news about his murder. At the first house he comes to, Huck sees a forty year old woman in the window knitting and knocks on her door. She readily takes him in and seems, at the beginning at least, to believe he is a girl. With very little prompting from Huck, she tells him that most people in the town think it was Jim who murdered Huck.

The first indication in the chapter that Huck now sees Jim as a friend is when he goes to protest Jim's innocence. He only stops himself when he realizes that any word from him would only give away his identity and Jim's whereabouts. Having heard that the authorities are...
