This is a very good question. This question show cultural and social sensitivity. In other words, you know that there are differences between cultures in communications.

Here are a few things that are important to keep in mind. In most Asian cultures, there is an element of respect. Generally speaking, the older a person is the more respect must be shown to that person. There might even be honorific ways of speaking, addressing people, and other cultural signs of respect. Americans should familiarize themselves with these social conventions when they deal with people in Asian countries. On the flip side, Asian who deal with American should know that these convention are different from culture to culture.

Another important point to consider are hospitality conventions. For example, if an American is invited into the house of an Asian family, they should take off their shoes. This might be a small thing, but things like this are deeply ingrained in Asian cultures.

Finally, it is important to keep in mind that in Asian cultures, generally speaking, the individual is less important than the group.
