Adult learning is an essential component of human resources development.

Human resources development consists of inducting and training staff members when they are first employed by a company and ensuring, on an ongoing basis, that they have all the knowledge that they need to succeed in the job that they have been hired to do.

Adult learning (andragogy) is defined as ways of learning that are specifically set up for adults, and is different to pedagogy, which is learning for children, such as in school.

One of the main characteristics of adult learning is that it is driven by purpose. In other words, adults learn so they can do their jobs effectively.

Here is a practical example of the link between human resources development and adult learning. A 45-year-old woman is hired as a journalist. The company chooses her over younger candidates because of the awards that she has won and the experience that she has as a writer. However, due to her age, she did not learn about social media and writing for online environments while she was at college. The human resources department enrolls her in an online writing course and empowers her to learn the skills that she does not have. When she combines these skills with her wealth of experience as a journalist, the company suddenly finds that she is ideal for her job in every way.

Human resources development is connected to adult learning because much of human resources development consists of helping adults to learn.

Human resources development generally consists of two main types of activities.  On the one hand, there are activities that are meant to improve the organizations.  They are meant to help organizations structure themselves in ways that promote learning on the part of their employees.  On the other hand, there are activities that are meant to promote learning on the part of the individual employees.  These activities typically involve various sorts of training.

The connection between this second aspect of human resources development and adult learning is clear.  In this aspect of human resources development, workers are trying to learn new skills.  Presumably, almost all workers who take part in such programs will be adults.  Since they are adults, and since they are trying to learn new things, their activities are connected to adult learning.
