How do digital narratives affect us?

Can you explain this to me so that I can do this assignment?

Find a digital narrative, such as a blog, a twitter feed, an Instagram account, a tumblr etc.

Use three different posts from the same digital narrative and explain how each of the posts builds to create a unified narrative in some way. Aim to write a 200 discussion per post and discuss any of the following devices:

  • Narrative mode
  • narrative voice
  • character
  • metafiction
  • metanarrative

A narrative is a story, and digital means something that exists online, and not in print form.  Thus a digital narrative is a story that exists online.  Basically, what this assignment is asking you to do is find a feed on twitter, Instagram, tumbler, Facebook, etc. and read a few entries, and then summarize it into a cohesive story.

Narrative mode basically refers to how the story is told.  I would argue that choosing a digital media is a large part of the digital mode.  Then you can discuss the common elements of narrative mode such as first person (using “I” and “we”), third person omniscient (using “he” and “they” from every characters point of view) and third person limited (the same, focusing on character).  Much of digital media is in the first person, and is autobiographical in nature. In other words, people are talking about themselves, describing their own lives.  Thus social media often has an in-the-moment kind of feel, in the present tense, describing what is happening now.

You might want to describe the social media account of a famous person, such as a movie, or an everyday person like a friend, and look at the narrative this person describes.  What does this person share?  Does this person focus on everyday life?  Does the person comment on politics?

The voice is how the person writes.  It is the person’s style.  Does the person write like a person talks?  Are the posts written in text jargon, with a lot of abbreviations?  In twitter, for example, space is limited.  You have 140 characters- that’s letters and punctuation- to say what you want to say.  How does this person use those characters?  How does the person use pictures?  That is also part of the person’s style.  Are posts self-centered, or does the person write about others?

Is the person writing a story, or writing about real life?  Sometimes people use social media for storytelling.  They might in this case make use of metafiction.  Metafiction is the use of fiction to explore the line between fiction and reality.  In this case, you might look into fiction that tells its story through social media posts, a process called Social Fiction, such as “Hawk Funn.”

Social media brings us closer to the idea of a metanarrative, the grand narrative that we all take part in.  Life is a story in which we all have a role.  All you have to do is choose one social media account and find one small part of that story in choosing three posts.  When you summarize it in 200 words be sure to explain 1) the point of view, 2) the author’s voice and style and 3) the overall content and how it fits into one unified story.  Good luck!
