Women contributed in many ways, including being nurses in the armed forces.

At home, some women did go to work in the factories as replacements for the men, although not to the same degree as they would in WWII.

Probably one of the most important roles that women played was in the volunteer work they did.  Cutting back on meats, growing their own vegetables, purchasing war bonds were all ways that women could participate in the war effort.
