Penny from Heaven is a novel written by Jennifer L. Holm. The main character of the novel is an eleven-year old girl named Barbara Falucci. However, everyone calls her Penny. Throughout the novel the cause of Penny's father's death remains a mystery until Penny overhears adults discussing the matter. At the time, Penny is hospitalized and hears a nurse saying her dad was a spy. Penny confronts her mother after she hears this. Her aunt decides to finally tell Penny the truth and explains that after the Pearl Harbor attack many non-citizens were viewed with suspicion. Penny's father was an Italian citizen and, therefore, was not allowed to own a certain type of radio. Penny's uncle Dominic bought her father the radio, not knowing Italians were legally not allowed to have these types of radios (because it was feared they would use them to spy on the US). Penny's father was arrested and imprisoned. He died in jail after becoming sick.
