How did Jonas feel after he was assigned to be the new Receiver of Memory in The Giver?

First things first, we need to establish what the Receiver of Memory is. In a nutshell, the Receiver is the only person who’s mind stores the collective memories of the community. In this world, masterfully created by Lois Lowry, everybody has the same things, they all work together for the good of the community and, thanks to medication, they are numbed to emotion. In this world, it is deemed necessary for one person to store all the memories from the past, just in case they are needed one day.

When the title of Receiver is bestowed upon Jonas, he feels a natural blend of fear and a type of elation that comes from the crowd cheering and chanting his name. I think it would also be natural for Jonas to have felt a little embarrassed, although the book does not tell us this, because the Chief Elder spent time singing Jonas’s praises to the audience as part of his explanation for why Jonas had been chosen.
