There is much historical dispute about when what we know as France today became a nation.  Many historians would agree that in the 400's Clovis united the Franks to form the Kingdom of Francia in the fallout of the fall of the Western Roman Empire.

The modern French Republic that is recognized today was the result of the French people rising up against King Louis XVI and taking control of the country during the French Revolution in 1789.
