The characters in Kindred deal with chaos in different ways. I will focus on the main character, Dana. She deals with the chaos of going from one culture to another by keeping a calm head and doing her best to fit in with the new culture. She also uses her unique ability of saving Rufus to leverage power over him.

She does not always have a cool head, however. There is major chaos before she can determine when she will go to another time period. When she is back in modern day, she experiences extreme anxiety because she cannot predict what will happen. She is unwilling to leave her house and desperately tries to convince her husband that she is not crazy.

This shows that chaos actually helps Dana calm down. However, the calm moments, where she cannot predict what will happen, create anxiety.
