The structure of the chapters is linear, following Nathan and Ruku as they come to their son's wife's home, then struggle to survive homeless in the city. Chapter 26 has two sections and Chapter 27 has five, each describing a new phase in their journey. The structure of the book as a whole is circular; the story's end takes us back to the beginning, with Ruku living with her children Selvam and Ira after Nathan's death.

The resolution is effective and quietly hopeful, but as we see Ruku back home without her beloved husband, I think we cannot help but wish that they had never embarked on that last fateful journey.
