At the beginning of the book, Bryon is an arrogant teenager who enjoys hustling and fighting. Bryon gets into trouble and does not really care about how his behavior negatively affects other people. Once Bryon begins dating Cathy, he starts to mature and becomes a more sensitive, tolerant person. Bryon begins to develop a perspective on life and realizes that Mark does not have the ability to distinguish between right and wrong. Bryon also begins to spend more time with Cathy and less time getting into trouble with Mark. Bryon also enjoys being in a relationship with a person who is down to earth and not controversial. Cathy brings out the best in Bryon, and he begins to take life seriously. Bryon's relationship forces him to mature, and he begins to realize Mark is a bad influence on him.
