I would say that one of the most critical elements to demonstrating qualities of leadership and character is the willingness to embrace paths that might diverge from what others do. I think that the concept of leadership helps to bring the image of distinguishing oneself from others. There are times when it is convenient or expedient to follow others. Yet, this practice is not one that reflects leadership and courage. It is one that actually hinders such traits. I think that being able to reflect on these ideas becomes critically important in attempting to harness leadership and courage. At the same time, one has to examine these traits and be able to actively embrace the concept of practicing them on a consistent basis. One cannot choose the timing of when these moments will present themselves, but when they do, one must be willing to act in a manner that reflects the qualities of leadership and character. It is through this that one will be able to demonstrate and harness them in full amount.
In my opinion, leadership is a pattern of behavior, a habit of being assertive, speaking up, being a role model and getting involved. We show leadership in our daily lives, by how we carry ourselves in public and how we interact with the people we come in contact with. Leadership means taking initiative, being the one to volunteer, or the one who takes action without being asked or required to do so.
We have a definition for character painted on the wall of our school: "Character is doing the right thing when no one is looking". To have a set of values, a clear understanding of right and wrong, and then living according to those values, even if difficult circumstances. This is character.
You can show leadership by being assertive, loyal, honest and trustworthy. Take ownership of a situation that perhaps nobody wants to deal with. Speak up for what you believe in without being rude or standoffish.
The famous quote "Charater is doing the right thing when nobody is looking" Character tells exactly who a person is just by watching what they do. It is your values and beliefs regardless of what other people think.
