How can you relate the character Squeaky to the main idea of the story, Raymond's Run?
Hazel Parker, better known as Squeaky, is the main character in the story Raymond's Run by Toni Cade Bambara. She is determined to be an athlete, a runner at the top of the class. She is unashamed of her ambitions and pursues them with dedication despite being her mentally challenged brother's caretaker. Bambara wants us to know that girls have ambitions and will fight to achieve them. When Hazel insists on her teacher using her real name, she is demanding respect. When the race is on between Hazel and the new girl Gretchen, Hazel begins her coming of age when she recognizes her brother's own race, that he has talents also, and that she can be friends with Gretchen through their mutual interest in running instead of being alone in her pursuit of her goals.
