This an extremely broad and complicated question. There will be no right answer and people will disagree. Therefore, my answer will only offer one perspective that comes from the Greeks. In Plato's Timaeus, Socrates states that people are fragmented. There is the mind, which is the seat of reason. There is the heart, which, if influenced by the mind, can do great things, like be courageous in battle. Finally there is the lower part of the person, which is the seat of desires and appetites. Plato argues that what is best is when a person is able to use his or her mind through philosophy to control the other parts of the human. In this way, there will be harmony and control. So, to give one answer, a platonic one, through reason a person can be in touch with his or her emotions and heart. Moreover, through reason a person will be able to control his or her heart and emotions.

The human brain controls all of human functioning, including thought, behavior, emotion, and automatic body processes.  There are different areas of the brain that control different aspects of functioning; for example, the amygdala plays a significant role in emotional responses.  There are also chemicals in the brain called neurotransmitters which can influence emotions, thoughts, and behavior depending on the levels that are present.

The brain is incredibly complex, but it is the powerhouse of human existence.  In both conscious and unconscious states, activity in the brain influences how we feel, think, and act.
