Productivity can defined as the amount of goods or services that are produced by a given number of workers in a given time period.  If, for example, your firm used to be able to produce $100 worth of goods per hour with two workers and now it can only produce $75 worth, its productivity has gone down.  One thing that can make productivity go down is drug abuse.

The main problem with drug abuse with respect to productivity, at least in the short term, is that it tends to reduce an employee’s ability to work well.  Drugs can make a person less energetic or motivated.  Other drugs can make a person hyper.  Other drugs can make a person have a harder time processing information in their brains or can even make them hallucinate.  All of these things would make it very hard for a worker to remain productive.  A hyper worker might not take enough time on tasks and might make mistakes.  A worker who could not process information might misunderstand tasks and make mistakes in that way.  Workers who are not able to focus on their jobs will not be productive.  Therefore, drugs of abuse can reduce productivity in any organization.
