This is a great question. There are three important points to consider. First, you are asking about the doctrine of the trinity. According to Christian theology God is in three persons - father, son, holy spirit. All three are equal and one God. This passage suggests this when Jesus says if you have seen him, you have seen the father.
Second, although God is one, each person has a role. The son's role is to lead people to the father. This is why Jesus says he is the way, truth, and the light. From this point of view, the persons of the trinity all have a role to save people.
Finally, the father loves his people. In fact, he is the one who created the plan of salvation. This is one of the most important points in John's theology. Keep in mind the most famous verse in John - John 3:16.
