Physical changes are those in which no change in chemical composition takes place. A change of state (or phase) may take place in the case of a physical change. A chemical change represents a change in the chemical composition of the material and is usually evident by a color change, the release of gases, the formation of a precipitate, etc. 

When we burn a candle, solid wax melts. However, even in molten form, it still stays wax and hence no change in the chemical composition of wax takes place. This is an example of a physical change. The candle wick, upon burning, releases soot and gases. The material of the wick burns and generates gases, exhibiting a change in its chemical composition. This is an example of a chemical change.

Thus, both physical and chemical changes take place when we burn a candle.
