An important strand of Romanticism is the supernatural, and we see this strongly influence the action on Prospero's island. Magic, in fact, is integral to getting the plot moving. The sprite, Ariel, performs the magic under Prospero's direction. Magic is what spirits the ship holding Prospero's enemies safely to the shore of the island during the storm that opens the play. After that, Prospero uses Ariel's magic to separate, manipulate, and terrify his enemies.
