In The House of the Scorpion, as Matteo finds out his identity and how he came to be, he interacts with a group of children who are approximately his age. These children are from two families. Matt is biologically related to two brothers, Benito and Steven Alacrán, but not to their half-brother, Tom. The three boys have the same mother, Felicia. Because Matt is a clone, although he is apparently in the same generation as Benito and Steven, he is the biological equivalent of their great-great-grandfather, El Patrón.

Matt also gets to know the Mendoza sisters, Emilia and Maria. US Senator Mendoza is one of El Patrón’s associates. His daughters, Emilia and Maria, grow up spending considerable time in Opium, and Matt's friendship with Maria gradually develops into a romantic attachment. Emilia becomes involved with Steven, and they eventually get married.

Within these two groups of siblings, Tom does not really fit in. While everyone pretends that Alacrán is his father, his father is actually MacGregor. This is difficult to disguise because he resembles his father in having red hair. El Patrón plans for Tom to marry Maria. Tom is a bitter, spiteful boy who interferes with Matt, especially as it becomes obvious that Maria prefers Matt.
