Hopes and Fears for Obama

What are your hopes and fears for Obama's first year?  God knows he faces huge problems with our economy, the Middle East, and myriad other issues.

My greatest fear -- although I manage to convince myself that it won't happen -- is that someone will get through security and . . . . I don't even want to put it in words.

My greatest hope is that his intelligence, sense of self and intense desire to get the best advice available will help him to find creative and effective solutions to at least some of these pressing concerns.

Interesting to look back on this topic a couple of years later.  Given our history of violence against black leaders, I had a serious fear of his assassination, and I guess I still do.  I had hoped he would more quickly get us out of our two foreign entanglements (which he has partially done).  I had hoped the economy would respond more favorably to his policies and that he would repeal No Child Left Behind and become more friendly towards education in general.

I think Obama is an above average President, especially given the situation he inherited, and the fiscal restraints that limit what he can do.  I also am disappointed that Obama the President is not who Obama the Candidate was.

I think he will win a second term largely because of a lack of serious Republican opposition.  Perhaps in his second term he will find the leadership within him to carry out his earlier promises.  I guess we'll see.

My greatest fear is your greatest fear and I can't stand even to think about it and what it would do to our country's spirit.

My greatest hope for President Obama, beyond hoping for his success which will then become our success, is that the American people will be patient and give him sufficient time to deal with all he has been given to do.

My fear is that he is being handed a country in crisis, in a variety of ways. My hope is that he is as capable of dealing with all of the problems as he seems to be. He is surrounding himself with intelligent advisers from a variety of political viewpoints, and seems very capable, himself.
