Complementary medicine may be combined with alternative medicine and jointly described as being "a group of diverse medical and health care systems, practices, and products that are not generally considered part of conventional medicine." Conventional medicine would refer to the traditional forms of health care prescribed by physicians, osteopaths, and other formally trained health care providers. Holistic health care aims to combine complementary or alternative approaches and treatments with traditional methods in order to address a patient's medical, physical, psychological, and social needs.
Massage therapy provided in combination with prescribed muscle relaxants would be one example of a holistic approach to health care. The use of acupuncture along with traditional treatment (prescribed medications) can be an effective method of treating pain and is another example of holistic health care. Use of directed physical exercise, nutritional education, and weight-loss surgery exemplifies a holistic approach to helping a patient with a morbid weight issue.
