The most important historical reference on this page is the reference to the Pledge of Allegiance.  It was composed for the dedication of the Columbian Exposition by Francis Bellamy.

The Pledge of Allegiance has been important in our history because of how it has in some ways reflected our national preoccupations.  Bellamy (who was, ironically enough, a Christian socialist) felt it would help to Americanize immigrants.  Later, the Pledge was updated to refer to God so as to differentiate US democracy from atheist communism.  Today, it is part of the culture wars because of that reference to God.

The Pledge is the most important historical reference on this page.
