Discuss the implications of the current stand- off between Anna Hazare and the Congress Government.
Gandhian social activist Anna Hazare has declared open political war against the Congress Party. In a make-or-break move heavily tinged with politics, the nation’s anti-corruption face has become the newest political opponent of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government. 'We have appealed to the people in this poll. Congress should be defeated as it has failed to bring the Jan lokpal Bill,'.

I think that there are a couple of elements that need to be brought out here. The first is that this becomes one of the critical moments between the anti- establishment Hazare and the establishment force of the Congress Party. While there has been a groundswell of support for Anna, I think that how this translates into political reality remains to be seen. When Indians go to the polls, will his support translate into an electoral repudiation of the Congress Party? This becomes the question because the Congress party's political infrastructure for getting the vote out as well as ensuring its own political viability might be a separate entity than the public support Anna Hazare has been enjoying. The Congress Party has been around Indian politics for as long as there has been an India. Its roots in the sustenance of its political survival are very deep and run throughout India. The question becomes whether the support that Anna enjoys is enough to destabilize this political infrastructure. I think that we have to see how this develops. Certainly, there is some level of crisis mode that the Congress Party is enduring, along with other parties such as the BJP. All Indian political parties are in a fractured or weakened state. However, there still exists a difference, if not a chasm, between how this social activism will translate into political reality.
