The responsibilities of high school principals are considerable. Charged with authority over and responsibility for potentially thousands of students as well as teachers, coaches and support staff, including the safe operation of school cafeterias, high school principals are expected to have skills commensurate with the requirements of the position for which he or she has been hired.
When seeking applicants for the position of principal, school district officials or school boards will solicit applications from individuals with experience in classrooms, advanced graduate school degrees, the requisite certifications, and demonstrated leadership abilities. All of these, in addition to the ability to administer an organization characterized by hundreds or thousands of children of varying ages, levels of emotional maturity, upbringing, and intellects, and to do so without incurring the wrath of parents.
The techniques that high school principals utilize in administering the institutions for which they are responsible, then, are directly linked to the requirements specified by the hiring authorities -- for example, the aforementioned school district or school board officials – in the formal solicitation for applications for the position. Leadership qualities, training in administering a school, knowledge of all pertinent laws and regulations, and knowledge of trends or developments in education are all requirements of the job. High school principals utilize their authorities as specified in state and local regulations to administer the institution for which they are responsible, shape and maintain curricula in accordance with prevailing guidelines, and hire and maintain staffs with the skills and experience necessary to ensure that the children in his her charge receive the education and care expected of schools.
