Hi, I was just wondering if someone can help me find a link to the passage in the (Qur'an/Shia'aat?) where people beat themselves for their God?

I have been told this passage can be found in the Qur'an, but I am  not sure, so I'm sorry if I've happened to offend anyone.

There is no such passage in the quran as god doesn't tell us in the quran to beats our selfs infact he says quite the opposite Allah tells us to look after our bodies and not to harm them as they are not ours they are gods and it is forbidden to harm yourself in any way

i understand now.. you'll not find anything about that in the Qura'n cuz this is not part of Ialsm. this is not islamic thoughts we don't do this if we are pure muslims . God never askes us to do this and hurts ourselves.

Hi katrina14,

The previous responses address your question specifically so I want to assist you as you continue to study and grow in your faith as well as in your college studies.  As a librarian, I sometimes use Wikipedia to help me find "search terms" for further study.  Wikipedia can lead you to authoritative sources but it should not be considered as an authoritative source.  I would recommend that any users of Wikipedia remember that it is a site where a person can add his or her own opinions.  This information may later be challenged by another person who questions the validity of the added information.  Users are supposed to provide a citation from an authoritative source to back up the information they submit to the website.  If you notice, the citations attached to this bit of information link to YouTube videos.  I would not consider these videos to be authoritative sources.  I hope you will find this information to be helpful to you.

God doesnt tell us in the Quran to beat ourselves, this is completely forbidden. This is people who are mixing islam with their culture leading them to a new belief, also could be classed as extremism!

Thankyou! Sorry, I think that this might help more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mourning_of_Muharram

Under "Types of Mourning", it says:

"Many of the male and female participants congregate together in public for ceremonial chest beating (matam) as a display of their devotion to Imam Husayn and in remembrance of his suffering. In some Shi'a societies, such as those in Bahrain, Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Lebanon and Iraq, some male participants incorporate knives or razors swung upon chains into their matam.[2]"

This should originally be written of in a scared text, however, I do not know where to find it :S
