Hi! I've read Skinwalkers (by Tony Hillerman) twice so far but I don't understand it. Who killed Erma Onesall? Who killed Biste, and why? Who killed Endocheeney, and why? I also don't know where Wilson Sam fit in. Thanks!

Dr. Yellowhorse killed Onesall, and is behind the other murders as well.

Yellowhorse runs the financially strapped Badwater Clinic, and has been filing false insurance claims on patients dead or no longer being treated to keep the facility afloat.  Onesall, from the Social Services offices, is investigating the situation, working off a list of patients whose claims are suspected of being fraudulent.  Wilson Sam and Endocheeney are on the list, and Yellowhorse, afraid that they will talk, manipulates anonymous victims - patients and their family members carefully chosen because they are desperate, naive, and superstitious - into killing them in the belief that they are Skinwalkers, or witches, who are causing all their hardships.  Biste is one of those unwittingly recruited to kill Endocheeney, but before he can complete the task he is arrested by the Tribal Police.  Yellowhorse ends up killing Biste himself to keep him from talking to the police.

Yellowhorse justifies his actions by saying the number of lives the Clinic saves is far greater than the number of people he will have to kill to continue his scheme to keep it open.

Hope this helps!
