Hi there everyone, ive been given three questions to pick from for an essay. im thinking this is the easiest one to do but unfortunatley i cant get to a library from hospital so thought id ask for help on planning and key points to consider whilst i can use internet here.

i have to pick two texts from either.Robinson Crusoe, Pride and Prejudice, and Great Expectations. these offer various ‘styles of masculinity’ or ways of being a man in their respective periods. By using two texts, i need to analyse how these works interrogate the differing types of masculinity portrayed.

any pointers on how to start this argument and structure will be of great help.

thanks in advance

  • begin by defining masculinity, and its earlier and clear instances in literature.
  • the importance of the hero from medieval romances, epic, modern novel.
  • introduce both texts, name of the protagonist, short overview
  • your subject matter, styles of masculinity with quotations and secondary sources.
  • conclusion: the change in masculinity, todays hero and notions of masculinity.
