Hi, I need to write a creative prose response based on The Cellist of Sarajevo. I have decided to write from the perspective of the character Arrow. I am just unsure of what situation to write about from her perspective and what vital symbols and themes I could include.

A great example of a situation to write about from Arrow's perspective would be when she first sees the Cellist and has to get her head around her assignment, which is to keep him alive as he performs. Vital symbols to talk about would be weapons, given Arrow's name, and important themes include war, pressure to succeed and the fear of failure.

You have chosen an exciting character to focus your assignment on. Arrow is a young sniper with a conscience. She initially had strong objections to killing people and had to be convinced that by putting her impressive skills to use, she would be saving lives in the long run.

I would suggest starting at the beginning and telling the story of when Arrow first lays eyes on the Cellist. There are a lot of powerful emotions in this scene that you could write about. Place yourself in the position of Arrow. She has been tasked with protecting a man who is attempting to bring some beauty to the war-torn wasteland that is described. In accepting this assignment, Arrow has been given the job of preserving the last piece of beauty that is to be found in the city.

Thanks to the fact that your assignment asks you to be creative, you can think about what she would have been feeling and put words into her mouth, so to speak. I would imagine that Arrow felt immense pressure not to fail, and that she would have counted down each of the 22 days that he has pledged to play. Every day that the Cellist was safe would have been a victory for Arrow.

Themes to touch on in this assignment would include fear, pressure to succeed, and the importance of precision. Deadly weapons are an obvious symbol to use, given that your protagonist’s name is Arrow and she is a sniper.

This is the kind of project you can have fun with, as there are no right and wrong answers as long as you don’t contradict the facts as they are portrayed by Steven Galloway.
