Racist people definitely learn from those who have the most influence on their lives. This usually includes parents, friends, family members or others who may start to "plant the seeds" in the minds of impressionable children.

Rather than people taking the time to really examine some of the differences between each group, they prefer to take the easier way out and remain ignorant and proclaim that they are correct and superior in all of their views. If anything happens to reinforce these views (such as being wronged by a person of another race), then that makes it harder for the racist person to ever change his/her beliefs.

Not only do people adopt racist views that have been passed down to them from generation to generation, they are also likely influenced on larger scales by certain hate groups, religions, leaders, literature, the media, social situations, and so on.

People are naturally afraid of difference, and gravitate toward others who are like themselves.  Often, people react out of fear and this leads to cruelty.  For example, many people seem to think that homosexuality is contagious.  They fear that if they are nice to someone, they too will become gay, or others will see them as gay.  This attitude stems from ignorance, but also from our fear of things we do not understand.

Tolerance is learned, just as hatred is.  Once people have positive experiences with individuals under safe circumstances, and become educated, they do sometimes become more open-minded.  Yet when it is still socially unacceptable to be gay or of color, many of these same people will not be brave enough to stand out from the crowd in group situations.

Wow... there's a tough question.  I think that racism today mainly comes from two things.  First, you have to have parents or other role models who are themselves racist so that you start out that way.  After that, you have to either A) not have the chance to get to know people of other races (so they just all seem the same to you) or B) be close-minded enough that you are not willing to look at people of other races as individuals even if you have a chance to.

So I think there has to be the seed of racism planted in you, but then part of it is also about your own personal attributes.
