I would begin with a topic sentence involving your topic:
Conflict in life is inevitable. It is impossible to avoid conflict. Conflict changes a person. This change often is for the better. However, some people allow conflict to get the best of them. In The Crucible, conflict is evident. Many innocent characters lose their lives due to being accused of witchcraft. This time of accusing innocent people of witchcraft brought out conflict that costs innocent people to lose their lives. During this time, some people stood up for what is right and died. Others stood by and allowed this to happen. It is through the encounter with conflict that brings out either courage or cowardice in a person.
In the body of the paper, you could write about the conflict among the characters in The Crucible. You could give examples of this conflict. For example, you could share how teenage girls were accusing innocent people of witchcraft. You could share how this conflict brought out courage in men like Proctor and Giles. You could also give examples of how this conflict brought out cowardice in some characters, especially those who stood by and allowed innocent people to hang.
Be sure and add a strong conclusion. Repeat your topic sentence. Explain how some characters behaved with courage in the face of conflict. Explain how some characters behaved cowardly. Explain how people like Danforth stood by and even endorsed the hanging of innocent people.
I have changed your topic to Essay Lab. You will see over in the right-hand column that three of the Related Questions are very similar to your own. Two of the Related Questions are about encountering conflict. I suggest that you refer to these in order to get started. It seems obvious that you would start your essay with the thesis statement you have included with your question, i.e., that it is through encounter with conflict that courage or cowardice are brought out in a person. The next step would be to say that this truth is exemplified inThe Crucible. Next you would have to explain what the conflict is and who is affected by that conflict and why. Next you would have to explain whether encountering the conflict brought out courage or conflict in the individual involved. The conclusion would probably be to highlight how the character had changed as a result of the conflict and perhaps how this demonstrates the inevitability and the importance of conflict in all human life.
