Hello,

I am reading 1876 and wondering about the historical accuracy of the book? Could this book be used to help teach the time period? Is Schuyler's description of New York historically accurate? Is Schuyler's description of Tilden and Hayes accurate?

While the book 1876 is a fictional novel that was written in 1976, meaning the author had no first-hand account of the time period being written, the author did note that the book was written to describe what the author viewed as the “lowest year of the republics history”. The focus of the book is on a presidential election and how disputes over the results and popular vote that would sway the course of history.  Within the book Tilden won the popular vote however there were result disputes and in the end it was determined that Hayes won. While this is a fictional novel it is important to note that similar situations have happened in real life, most famously in 2000 where Florida had to recount the votes for the election between George W. Bush and Al Gore.
