Have we in the US sacrificed our personal liberties that are granted us by nature?
In my history class we have to create an essay showing whether the U.S. has created a modern government according to Locke. In resoponse to this answer said yes, but I'm having trouble answering the second question. Please Help!
This is, of course, a matter of opinion. My own opinion is that we have not given up the rights that Locke says are fundamental.
Locke says that we are given the rights to life, liberty, and property. In the US, our lives and our property are clearly protected by law. No one may come and simply take your property or your life because they want to. Some may argue that various laws today deprive us of our liberty. For example, people argue that things like motorcycle helmet laws or seat belt laws in cars are examples of the government taking away our rights to act as we please. However, our major liberties are still protected. We clearly have the right to speak our minds and to worship as we wish. We have the right to live where we want and move when we want. We have all of our important rights protected even if some people think they are being chipped away.
