Although the world has changed since the days of Beowulf--and the role of the leader along with it--many of the characteristics of leadership remain the same. For example, good leaders must exhibit the courage to put the interests of others before themselves. Beowulf did this by risking his life to fight the monsters who threatened the Danes and the Geats. Modern leaders will not face crises such as these; however, they still need to have the courage and integrity to put the interests of their citizens before themselves. For example, a politician must have the courage and integrity to resist bribes. Likewise, he or she must be willing to make the right decision, even if it is unpopular. For these reasons, all aspiring leaders should consider Beowulf a role model.
