This is one of my favorite books by Stephen King. It basically deals with the consequences of bringing the dead back to life. Louis Creed and his family move to Ludlow, Maine, and they meet the elderly Jud Crandall, their neighbor. Several events occur that set up the eerie mood of the woods and the pet cemetery there where children bury their pets. While Louis' family is gone, his daughter's cat dies, and Jud takes Louis and the cat to a Native American burial ground, and Louis buries the cat there. The next day, the cat comes home, but he's very different, smelling and looking like death. Then, Louis' son dies, and of course Louis wants to bring him back by burying him in the same place as the cat. Jud tries to talk him out of it, but Louis cannot be dissuaded. In the meantime, Louis' wife, Rachel, decides to drive home. The son returns as a demon-like character who kills Jud in his home, and when Rachel arrives at Jud's house, he kills his mother as well. Realizing what he has done, Louis burns down Jud's house and takes Rachel's body to the burial ground. He thinks he waited too long to bury his son, and that is why he came back as an evil demon. So Louis buries Rachel and waits for her return. Louis is, of course, insane by this time. The book ends when Louis hears Rachel say, "Darling".
