I have a baseball bat. I shave off some weight from the handle and put it on the head of the bat. Abaseball player thinks I have changed the bat’s moment of inertia. Is he right?
Player shave off some weight from the handle and put it on the head of the bat.But both the mass and length of the baseball bat are kept unchanged but mass distributed from one area of the bat to another.Thus distribution of mass changed.This changed the center of gravity of the base ball bat.Since moment of inertia is the measure of the inertia of a rotating body and inertia is a rotating object’s tendency to remain at rest when at rest or remain in motion when in motion unless acted upon by an external force.
The moment of inertia of an object in angular motion is depend on the object’s mass and the distribution of the mass with respect to the point of rotation. So the moment of inertia will also change.
