Has Jane Hirshfield, who wrote this poem, ever been married or had children?
I searched several web sites trying to answer your question, from highbrow literary journals like The New Yorker and The Atlantic to mainstream information gatherers like wikipedia. All of them give long lists of Hirshfield's accomplishments in poetry and devotion to Zen Buddhism. None of them, however, say much about her personal life.
We know that she has won the Poetry Center Book Award, three Pushcart Prizes, and many other awards. She has held fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Academy of American Poets. Yet we know very little about her outside of her work.
Given the fact that Hirshfield lived trained in Zen Buddhism, which observes celibacy, and lived a monastic life for eight years, it is probably safe to say that she has never married or had children.
