An essay is usually "devoted to the presentation of the writer’s own ideas and generally addresses a particular aspect of the subject." Your essay needs to relate to Fitzgerald's portrayal of and comment about the American Dream, as presented in The Great Gatsby. Therefore, you need to decide what you think about what is presented in the story.
Fitzgerald presents Gatsby as feeling he has, in large part, achieved the American Dream. He is rich, has the appropriately large mansion and fabulous wardrobe, and gives lavish parties attended by socially exciting guests who enjoy the alcoholic beverages and other activities of the gatherings. Do you agree that those activities indicate that a person has fulfilled the American Dream? Why or why not? Do you think Fitzgerald felt Gatsby had achieved his American Dream? Why or why not?
Your essay should present your understanding of what Fitzgerald thought of the American Dream, presenting examples from the book that illustrate the factors shaping your understanding. Use passages or quotes from the book to support your opinions.
