See my answer to your question in the Question and Answer section. I think the author intentionally left some things vague. My grandmother was a Cherokee who left that culture to marry my white grandfather. She gave up all the old ways, and in her later years I tried to get her to talk. By then, however, she had forgotten so much or misremembered things that it was just a confusing jumble. That's what it must have been like for Granny's daughters in the story. She would halfway tell a story or imagine that she was reliving a past event.
