I don't think there's any doubt that search engines such as Google make things easier for researchers. It gives a quick answer to many queries and gives a wide array of sources with which to continue additional research. It is true that many people use such search engines as an easy way around more in-depth study, and it is probably true that books have taken a back seat to on-line searches. Ultimately, the quick on-line research gives only a limited amount of information in comparison with full texts. However, what now takes minutes or hours to discover new information at the touch of your fingertips may have resulted in many days (or weeks or months) before the advent of the Internet--not to mention the travel involved to visit various libraries and other research facilities.
