There are quite a number of interrelated stories within the novel, The Glass Palace. The dominant stories in the novel include that of the royal family, the British invasion, and the relationship between Rajkumar, Saya John, Uma Dey, and Dolly.

The story begins with a young Rajkumar reuniting with his last surviving family member, Ma Cho. It is through Ma Cho that Rajkumar gets to meet with Saya John, a teak merchant. Rajkumar and John establish a business partnership, which helps to improve Rajkumar’s living standards and social status. Earlier on, Rajkumar meets Dolly, the queen’s handmaiden, during his trips to the palace and he falls in love with her. After the British invasion of Burma, Dolly is separated from Rajkumar after she joins the royal family in exile. After he succeeds in business, Rajkumar gets reunited with Dolly through Uma Dey, they get married, and return to Burma.
