I think that Ghandi is the most memorable. I know that the last poster mentioned him, but I will expand. Ghandi has become synonymous with peace more than any other figure. I think it is because of his diminutive precense. He just looked and seemed like such a sweet little guy, that everyone thinks of him when they think of nonviolent protest for change.

I think one of the most memorable peaceful people on earth was Mohatma Gandhi.  His non-violent approaches to handling the English governing his country, India, is inspiring!  He seemed to be a sweet, compassionate, firm, gentle, dedicated man and his example so inspired millions of people worldwide that he's remembered even to this day!

Jesus: A great teacher of peace. Refer to his teachings...especially notable is the Sermon on the Mount, New Testament in the Bible, Matthew 5-7. He says,"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God." (Matthew 5:9, New International Version) He preaches extensively on "turning the other cheek," and praying "for those who persecute you."

Would have to agree on the three above. How about Nelson Mandela former South African President from 1994 to 1999. Also, Rosa Parks was a integral part of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States in the 60's.

Some of the great names that come to mind include:

Martin Luther King Jr.: A leader in the Civil Rights Movement, he knew that his goals would not come about through violence and therefore staged events and protests well within the limits of the law. See site below.

Mother Theresa: This woman served the poorest of the poor and provided hope and peace to millions in Calcutta who had nothing. She gave her life to the cause of helping others. This might be a different kind of peace than you are looking for, but it is peace nonetheless.

Ghandi: Check out his life's work section in the link below. It discusses his quest for a nonviolent approach to seeking independence.

Sometimes peaceful persons may also have to engage in war. I believe, Abraham Lincoln also qualifies as one of the greatest peaceful persons among kings and political leaders. King Asoka (? -232 B.C.) of India is another controversial candidate for inclusion in the list of memorable peaceful person.. He was, initially, a power hungry person, who initiated and waged many bloody wars to expand his empire. However, his transformation after the Kalinga war turned him in to one of the most important political figure in the history to spread the message of peace and non-violence in the world through in form of Buddhist religion

Almost all the person who became an inspiration for start of any major religion in the world, perhaps lead the list of most peaceful persons of the world, much ahead of kings and politicians. But I would like to mention names of just two - not because they were necessarily more peaceful than other, but - because their teachings put a great stress on non-violence. They are Buddha and Mahavira Jain.
